Abstract

Telemedicine and digital health technologies have expanded opportunities for healthcare delivery, particularly in geographically remote and underserved communities. This paper examines the potential role of telemedicine in improving healthcare accessibility in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Digital consultations, remote monitoring, mobile health applications, electronic health records, and tele-diagnostics can help overcome geographical barriers and connect patients with healthcare professionals. However, implementation is influenced by several challenges, including inadequate digital infrastructure, unreliable internet connectivity, limited digital literacy, data-security concerns, financial constraints, and shortages of trained personnel. The study discusses opportunities for integrating telemedicine into existing healthcare systems while emphasizing the importance of appropriate regulation, patient privacy, interoperability, and equitable access. Sustainable digital-health strategies should be designed according to local healthcare needs and infrastructure. With appropriate investment and policy support, telemedicine can complement conventional healthcare services and contribute to improved access and continuity of care.
